VILLAGE LIFE -- SIRINCE VILLAGE - WINE TOUR (Departs daily at 5.00pm - returns 7.00pm)
Departure from Selcuk
This charming old Orthodox village, 12 km away from Ephesus, was once called Cirkince ("ugly"). Indeed its inhabitants gave this name on purpose as they did not want to be bothered by foreigners nor wish to share the beauty of their village. Still after years, visitors understood that the village was not ugly at all and called it Sirince ("pretty"). Sirince village is located at the top of a mountain, with stunning views of the vine yards and peach orchards the region is famous for. Today the village is a perfect synthesis of Turkish-Greek culture as of the 1920's. After the War of Independence a people exchange between the Greeks and Turks occurred and all those typical Greek houses, though they have kept their original outside characteristics, have received the local layout inside. As you wonder through the alleyways you will notice that some of them are open to visitors, in particular one that has a semi restored Orthodox church in its courtyard.
The narrow cobblestone streets of the village belong to the women, selling handcrafts of all kinds, but the main attraction of Sirince is its wine: try its taste in small cafes or in the former municipal school which has now been restored. Although Sirince is developing its tourism trade very quickly, it has been able to preserve its authenticity and the meaning of its name, making it a perfect afternoon out.
RATE: 10 Euro per person (includes A/C vehicle, parking fees, wine tasting)
Note: This tour may also be combined with an Ephesus Tour.
